About this Speaker

I am currently the CEO of the Michigan Tech Enterprise Corporation (MTEC) SmartZone (www.mtecsz.com), a nonprofit technology and innovation implementation organization located in Houghton Michigan. The MTEC SmartZone is one of 21 SmartZones operating in Michigan as part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporations (MEDC) technology entrepreneurship program (https://www.michiganbusiness.org/entrepreneurship/). We work collaboratively with the cities of Houghton, Hancock, surrounding communities, Michigan Technological University, Gogebic Community College, and Finlandia University to facilitate the development and commercialization of innovative technologies to create and support local economic development opportunities. We also offer facilities and support for established technology businesses from outside of the area who are seeking development resources, manufacturing innovation, operations and sales support, interns, co-ops and more in our community. I have also worked at Synaptics Incorporated in San Jose, CA. (human interfaces for consumer electronics), Skyworks Solutions Inc. in Boston MA. (RF semiconductors), Agere Systems Inc. and Lucent Technologies Inc.in Allentown, PA. (wifi and bluetooth semiconductors), AnswerChase Inc. in Annapolis MD. (ontological semantic search engines), and Competitive Technologies Inc. in Bethlehem PA. and Fairfield CT. (university technology licensing, development and commercialization). I belong to the Licensing Executives Society (LES) where I have earned and maintain my credentials as a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP), and to the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). I also earned an MBA from Lehigh University where I interned in, then ran the tech transfer office in the late 1990s. I work with faculty, university administrators, government/industrial representatives, and students, and have guest lectured classes in the fundamentals of IP, entrepreneurship, and other areas of business strategy and tactics such as developing cost models and business plans. I have also drafted a large library of agreement templates in areas including procurement, IP and technology licenses, joint development, M&A, and partnerships, most recently using these in my role as Senior Director of Business and Legal Affairs at Synaptics, where, as a member of the legal team I developed, negotiated and closed hundreds of agreements around the world in support of the growth of this $2b publicly traded technology company.
